National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) 2024
Help make KU become the best it can be.
In the spring of 2024, all first-year students and seniors had the opportunity to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The survey was administered February 22 - May 13.
Participation in NSSE provides KU with vital information about student experiences in and out of the classroom. The results drive campus-wide conversations and a set of recommendations for changes to policies and practices that support the success of all students and enhance the overall undergraduate experience.
NSSE shared the results with AIRE in September 2024.
An advisory team is formed and met for the first time on October 8. This team will review the results and steer the process to create recommendations.
NSSE is administered at KU every three years and is one of KU's Campus Constituent Surveys for the Lawrence and Edwards campuses. Since 2022, these surveys follow a consistent process of planning, administration, analysis, engagement, and the creation of actionable recommendations. A Campus Constituent Surveys Implementation Team are then tasked with reviewing, prioritizing, and communicating updates on recommendations three times a year.
As a KU Campus Constituent Survey, NSSE is a key process for assessing the success of Jayhawks Rising, the strategic plan for the KU Lawrence and Edwards campuses.
FAQS
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a national survey administered by the Center for Postsecondary Research within Indiana University’s School of Education. The survey annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about first-year and senior students' participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. NSSE provides participating institutions with a variety of reports that compare their students' responses with those of students at self-selected groups of comparison institutions. Comparisons are available for ten Engagement Indicators, six High-Impact Practices, and all individual survey questions.
When you take the time to tell us about your undergraduate experience at the University of Kansas, we take your responses very seriously. Participation in the survey provides KU with vital information about student experiences in and out of the classroom. The results drive campus-wide conversations and a set of recommendations for changes in policies and practices that support the success of all students and enhance the overall undergraduate experience.
NSSE captures the extent to which students report engaging in activities that promote academic challenge, foster interactions with peers and faculty, and contribute to a supportive campus environment. Students also report if they have participated or plan to participate in high-impact practices like learning communities, undergraduate research and service learning.
Data learned from NSSE can be used for assessment and improvement in a range of areas including:
- Academic advising
- Accreditation
- Enrollment management and recruiting
- Experiences with diversity
- Experiences with faculty
- Faculty and staff development
- First-year experience
- General education
- High-impact practices
- Planning and accountability
- Reporting by majors and programs
- Service-learning
- Student affairs
- Transfer student experience
- Writing programs

KU has surveyed first-year and senior students via the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) every three years since 2001. The only exception was in 2016, when all undergraduate students were surveyed via the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey.
